Men at Rush City prison go on canteen strike

The men imprisoned in Rush City wrote to administrators, asking for improved medical and mental health care, among other things.

RUSH CITY, Minn. — A group of men in Rush City prison are going on a canteen strike Thursday. 

The Minnesota Incarcerated Workers Organizing Committee shared that 118 men imprisoned in the Rush City facility wrote a letter to the administration, asking for improved access to phones, the gym and yard, and medical and mental health care.

In the letter, the men wrote that a physician is only available at the facility for 20 hours a week, making it difficult for them to get care. 

"The denial of care significantly affects the men physically, and psychologically. It commonly takes ten to fifteen days to be diagnosed by a physician and months if ever to be provided true care," the letter stated.
