Thursday marks one year since the Annunciation church and school shooting and south Minneapolis is honoring the lives lost and the survivors with a day of remembrance, support and acts of kindness.

The city declared that Aug. 27 is now Annunciation Remembrance Day in the city as the community is urging people to give back.

Fletcher Merkel died in the attack one year ago and now his mother, Mollie, is encouraging people to help someone in need through a donation, volunteering or even helping a turtle cross the road.

“Please carry fletcher’s memory— and kindness— with you today and every day,” she said.
