Starting Friday, Williams Arena will have a different official name as part of a new partnership between the University of Minnesota and Blue Cross Blue Shield.
The home of Golden Gophers basketball will finally be known by its long-standing nickname of “The Barn.”
The full official title includes the naming rights, “The Barn by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota.”
According to the university, the new name is meant to honor tradition while embracing a “vibrant future.”
The facility originally opened in 1928 as the Minnesota Field House. It was known as Williams Arena for 76 years, starting in 1950 until this year.
The new name is part of a 10-year deal between the two institutions to “create opportunities for health innovation” and work together on initiatives focusing on well-being across the state.
