Plea negotiations between federal prosecutors and Vance Boelter, the suspect charged in the murder of former Minnesota Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband, have advanced to the point where lawyers have asked a judge for a hearing.

Federal court documents filed Wednesday indicate that the Department of Justice has requested a hearing for a possible plea deal. A judge has set that hearing for Thursday at 10 a.m.

The filing states that federal prosecutors and Boelter’s attorneys have conferred and “respectfully request that a change-of-plea hearing be set.”

It adds that Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche “has authorized and directed the government not to seek the death penalty” in the case as part of the terms of the proposed plea deal.
