WASHINGTON — A tick-borne illness that can cause people to develop a potentially life-threatening allergy to red meat is on the rise, and cases are spreading to new regions across the U.S. at a concerning pace, health experts warn. 

It's called alpha-gal syndrome, and it's caused by a sugar molecule you can get from a tick bite. 

A few species of ticks carry the virus that causes alpha-gal syndrome, but it's most commonly associated with the lone star tick in the U.S. 

Lone star ticks are considered to be very aggressive. Adult females feature a characteristic white dot, or "lone star," on their back.
