Superior National Forest bans campfires in BWCAW

Stick to gas or propane cook stoves if you are planning a camping trip in the BWCAW.

ELY, Minn. — Don't plan on toasting any marshmallows if you are camping in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) in June. 

The U.S. Forest Service shared in a press release Thursday that an Emergency Forest Order was issued for the area from June 6 through June 30. Due to dry conditions and wildfire risk, the order restricts campfires, charcoal grills, barbeques, coal and woodburning stoves. 

This news comes as crews are battling the Birch Bay Fire near Ely. It had grown to about 35 acres and was 10% contained as of Wednesday.
