Officials alerting boaters, swimmers of chilly lake, river temperatures

With boating and swimming season ramping up, authorities have a cautionary message about lakes and waterways that may look inviting, but can still be dangerous.

“I mean, we’ve lost people who have just jumped into the water off a boat in May and never resurfaced because the water temperature was so cold,” explains Crow Wing County Sheriff Eric Klang.

Klang knows better than most.

Already this season, two people have drowned in his jurisdiction, in Little Emily Lake.

The most recent incident happened on Saturday.
