North High School celebrates improving graduation rate amid community challenges

North High School in Minneapolis is celebrating a rise in graduation rates.

MINNEAPOLIS —  For Keith Blasingame, the moment his stepdaughter Terriana Carter-Ricks crossed the graduation stage made the long wait worthwhile.

Carter-Ricks is one of 128 North High School seniors in this year's graduating class and part of a turnaround in the school's graduation numbers.

In 2023, North's four-year graduation rate stood at 68%, roughly 20 percentage points behind the state average. By last year, that figure had climbed to 81%.

"Just so much going on, violence and stuff of that nature, that they had to overcome that," Blasingame said.
