A new monument at St. Paul Fire Headquarters honors the legacy of the Godette brothers.
ST PAUL, Minn. — There's a new permanent monument honoring the legacy of the Godette brothers, who made significant contributions to St. Paul's fire department more than a century ago.
The statue now stands prominently at the St. Paul Fire Headquarters, which is also named after the men.
William and Alfred Godette were two of only 20 black firefighters during their time. William joined the department in 1885 and rose through the ranks to become fire captain. Alfred joined later in 1909 and died in the line of duty in 1921.
One of their descendants, Rollin Godette II, spoke at Friday's unveiling and shared a full-circle moment.
