U.S. Department of Agriculture said Monday that two additional cases of New World screwworm were confirmed in Texas, bringing the total number of cases to four.

WASHINGTON — Two more cases of a flesh-eating parasite were confirmed Monday in Texas, bringing the total number of cases to four across three counties hundreds of miles apart. 

The first two cases of New World screwworm were discovered just a few miles away from each other in southern Texas, near the U.S. border with Mexico. 

The first case was found June 3, and the second was confirmed June 5, both impacting cattle. 

The confirmed cases reported Monday included a dog in Andrews County and a calf in La Salle County, bringing the infestation across three counties and hundreds of miles apart from each other.
