Minnesota wrong-way driver blames her dog for deadly head-on crash

A suspected wrong-way driver is facing vehicular homicide charges after prosecutors say she repeatedly crossed into oncoming traffic in northern Minnesota before eventually colliding with a car, killing the driver.

Investigators say 43-year-old Shauna Dokken was swerving a red pickup truck on the wrong-side of Highway 11 before hitting an SUV on May 29.

The crash killed an 82-year-old Barbara Welberg of Baudette.

According to the criminal complaint, Dokken offered conflicting stories to officers, initially blaming her dog for grabbing the steering wheel while reaching for a treat.

Investigators also say that a witness reported seeing the pickup truck veer into oncoming traffic and nearly cause a collision east of Roseau.

Dokken had slurred and slow speech at the scene and hospital, despite testing negative for alcohol.
