SAINT PAUL, Minn. — The Minnesota Supreme Court reversed a lower court's ruling Friday, establishing a new precedent for how first responders can qualify for death benefits.
The case concerns Eric Groebner, who was an officer with the Anoka Police Department. He worked a 12-hour shift in September 2022 before he died the next day of a vascular rupture, according to court filings.
His widow applied for federal and state line-of-duty death benefits, but she was initially denied by the state. If first responders die because of a heart attack, stroke or vascular rupture, their families can be eligible for line-of-duty death benefits.
