MINNEAPOLIS — With control of Congress at stake in 2026, one of the most heated Democratic primaries for U.S. Senate is playing out this summer in Minnesota, where two high-profile elected officials are vying for the seat left open by outgoing Senator Tina Smith.

The race pits Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, the second-ranking executive in the state, against four-term Congresswoman Angie Craig in a battle that may serve as a barometer for the Democratic Party in this election cycle. 

At the state convention this weekend in Rochester, Flanagan earned the endorsement of the Minnesota DFL after Congresswoman Craig decided to bow out of the endorsement process just days before the convention.
