MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota — A popular off-leash dog park could be closing after a renewed effort to protect a sacred site of the Dakota people.
"The Park Board has learned through studies — as well as interviews with Indigenous historians and other members of the community — that the area around Mni Owe Sni or Coldwater Spring is considered a sacred site to the Dakota people," said Minneapolis Parks & Recreation Board (MPRB) Commissioner Jason Garcia. "We learned that it is a site of very significant cultural importance, as well as archaeological importance. With that knowledge, it didn't feel right to continue to use it as an off-leash dog park."
