A 47-year-old Isanti man is dead after going into Gun Lake to apparently try to save a dog, according to the Aitkin County Sheriff’s Office.
On Sunday afternoon, a neighbor spotted the victim struggling in the water and heard him shouting for help. That’s when other neighbors rushed out to help.
According to investigators, the neighbors found an unoccupied boat and after about 15 minutes of searching, they found the victim slightly submerged in the water.
Despite life-saving attempts, officials confirmed that Randy Benson had died.
The Aitkin County Sheriff’s Office thanked the neighbors who jumped in to help and extended its deepest condolences to Benson’s family and friends.
