In an action-packed WNBA, can offense win championships?

We’ve heard this in basketball for decades: Defense wins championships. The Lynx under coach Cheryl Reeve embodied that throughout the club’s dynastic run in the 2010s, and defense remained the foundation the last two seasons as the Lynx contended for that elusive fifth WNBA title.

But as we look around the WNBA now, winning seems to be all about offense. Every night, some team — maybe several — scores at least 100 points, sometimes both in the same game.

The Lynx have already hit triple figures 11 times, more than double the previous club record and tying for the second-highest total in the league’s 30 seasons, per research by Lynx and Timberwolves stats maven Paul Swanson. (The Indiana Fever, with 18 such performances, shattered the league record weeks ago.) Eighteen times the Lynx have shot 50% or better, tying the 2014 Phoenix Mercury for the second-most in league history. The record: 21, by Las Vegas in 2023.
