Hundreds come out for 5K in honor of fallen Mendota Heights police officer

More than 300 people joined a memorial 5K in Mendota Heights to honor fallen Officer Scott Patrick and raise money for Special Olympics.

Neil Garlock, former Mendota Heights mayor and race director, said many people at the event knew Patrick during his career.

“A lot of these people at this event had contact with Scott during his career, so they are honoring him today by just coming here and just enjoying the event,” said Garlock.

Patrick was a 19-year veteran of the Mendota Heights Police Department. He was shot and killed on July 30, 2014, during a routine traffic stop in West St. Paul and was the first officer killed in the line of duty in his department’s history.

Garlock said Patrick was known for connecting with people in the community. He said that is why so many people knew him.
