APPLETON, Minn. — The Department of Homeland Security has posted its intent online to use a private prison in western Minnesota to house up to 1,600 immigrant detainees.
The public document was posted Thursday by the General Services Administration and outlines a potential contract for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to use the Prairie Correctional Facility in Appleton. The facility has been shut down since 2010.
KARE 11 first reported on this idea in August 2025 when new documents then from within the Trump Administration highlighted its plans to open more immigrant detention centers by the end of that year.
