A simple way to save at the grocery store is to shop for frozen foods.

Frozen options can replace pricier takeout and cover multiple meals throughout the day. You can also use frozen foods for portion control while cutting down on food waste. Frozen fruits and vegetables are typically cheaper than buying fresh produce.

“Frozen vegetables often have more nutritional value than fresh vegetables because they are frozen right at the time they’re picked,” Matthew Point with the National Frozen and Refrigerated Foods Association said.

“There’s so many pieces in the frozen aisle that can help people reduce cost. You buy a bag of frozen meatballs and use it for lunch to make a sandwich, and then you can use the same meatballs and put them in a pasta dish that night.”

You can also buy in bulk or stock up during sales and freeze the food.
