A Minneapolis City Council member identified what she says looks like “lots of toys” in budget data that she said still does not clearly explain $21 million in overspending at the police department last year.

After months without answers, Minneapolis City Council Member LaTrisha Vetaw, who chaired the City Council’s Public Safety Committee in prior years, directed the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) to answer publicly before the City Council about what the extra tax dollars were spent on.

“I’ve never seen expenses like this. The amount of money being spent is huge,” Council Member Vetaw said in an interview on Friday.

“When I was the chair, we were under spent in MPD, and that was directly related to the amount of officers we had, so that’s understandable, but it seems excessive.”
