HAWKINS COUNTY, Tenn. — For 18-year-old Kathleen Self, hard work has always been part of daily life.
The recent high school graduate grew up on her family's farm in Tennessee, helping raise sweet corn, haul hay and care for cattle. This fall, she will trade those familiar fields for Cambridge, Massachusetts, after earning admission to Harvard University on a full scholarship.
The achievement comes after a difficult year for Self and her family.
