The fear of missing out, also known as FOMO, is becoming a financial problem for millions of Americans.

A new CouponCabin survey found 63% of participants admit to spending money they didn’t have just to attend social events. 15% say they’ve racked up more than $2,000 in debt trying to keep up with friends, parties and experiences.

St. Paul financial planner Bjorn Amundson with Quarry Hill Advisors tells us there are ways to save going out.

“Going out to restaurants and trying to keep up with all of the things [your] friends are ordering can really be a significant expense,” Amundson said. “You don’t have to go to every single event, and you can always find ways to cut back even if you do go out.”

Amundson recommends that, instead of splitting the bill, you only pay for what you bought and load up on gift cards.
