The Como Park Zoo opened one of its exhibits early Sunday to give visitors enough time to see its rare corpse flower, Horace, in full bloom.
Corpse flowers are a rare plant in the world, and even rarer is the bloom it has, lasting only around two days for visitors to see it. Because of this, the zoo decided to open its Japanese Garden early so visitors would have enough time to see Horace before the bloom furls once again.
Visitors shouldn’t expect Horace to smell his best.
Corpse flowers typically give off an odor described as “rotting meat” during its blooms.
The rest of the zoo will open at its regularly scheduled 10 a.m. start time.
On Saturday, the Como Park Zoo had to close early after a bomb threat, forcing visitors and staff to evacuate before closing time.
