Blue-green algae advisory issued for both Lake Nokomis beaches

An advisory for both the Lake Nokomis Main Beach and 50th Street Beach is in effect due to blue-green algae toxins found in the lakes, according to the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB).

City officials say the level of microcystin, a chemical produced by blue-green algae, exceeded the standard for safe swimming as recommended by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA).

The MPRB said that hot weather, sunny skies and water temperatures over 75 degrees Fahrenheit contribute to blue-green algae growth.
