Parents and other community organizers in the Anoka-Hennepin School District began gathering signatures on Monday to try to force a vote on whether to raise property taxes as the district plans staff cuts.
Organizers said Monday they have about half the signatures needed to put a ballot referendum before voters on whether to increase the district’s operating levy. Families behind the effort said they want to stop cuts to staff at Anoka-Hennepin schools.

Some residents who signed do not have children in the district, including Zach Atwood and Susan Anderson.
“Just concerned for the youth. You know, I want them to have proper education and enough teachers,” Zach Atwood said.
