A year after the tragic deaths of Melissa Hortman and her husband, Helping Paws honors their service dog Gilbert with a new litter of puppies.
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — A year after the deaths of former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman, her husband Mark, and their dog Gilbert, the nonprofit that trained him says their work has come full circle.
Helping Paws is honoring Gilbert's legacy through what it's calling the "Guided by Gilbert" litter, a group of golden retriever puppies born to Petra, a service dog who was once Gilbert's playmate and niece.
The puppies have since moved to host homes, where they will spend the next two to three years training before being placed with people with disabilities.
