A $24 million makeover for Lyndale Avenue South sparks debate

The area around 28th Street and Lyndale Avenue South is already a cone zone.

But a much larger project, more specifically, a $24 million makeover, could be on the way.

“I think as long as the improvements better outweigh what we had previously, I’m for suffering through the construction,” says Brandie Heins, who works in the neighborhood.

Right now, the “Lyndale Avenue South Reconstruction Project” exists only on paper.  

There have been several designs; the latest includes two-way protected bike lanes, dedicated bus lanes, new pavement, new curbs and sidewalks, and a center median instead of a middle lane.

Bike and bus lane supporters say they’re excited by the planned changes.

Currently, bicyclists must use the street or a sidewalk.
