The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board is investigating why about 150 fish were found dead in Lake Nokomis near the western lakeshore boat launch.

Officials say a common warm-weather fish disease is likely the cause, and according to the DNR, fish can be more vulnerable this time of year as warming water lowers oxygen levels and puts stress on their immune systems.

The Park Board said several species were involved in the fish kill.

The DNR said bacteria that would cause this fish disease do not pose a health risk to humans, though more dead fish could wash ashore in the coming weeks.

The DNR says that fish kills can happen every year from common infections when water warms quickly or after spawning, when fish are weakened and stressed.
